Salted Caramel Broom/Quidditch Sticks

I promised I would share the three easy steps to making these a couple of weeks ago.

Silly me assumed there would be caramels squares available this time of the year. Apples to dip, Hallowe’en around the corner… seemed reasonable to me.

That however was not the case and yesterday they were finally back in stock.

I mention the Kraft version of the caramels below. In this part of the world, they are slightly softer that the other available options (and more expensive) but they will be easier to manipulate. So here we go!

You will need:

Individually wrapped Kraft caramel squares

pretzel sticks ( the ones with salt )

Milk Chocolate

Dark Chocolate ( optional )

Salted Caramel Broom and Quidditch Sticks from My Kitchen WandStep One: Unwrap caramels. (You will need one for each pretzel stick). Squish them around the end of the pretzel to create the broom part of the broomstick.

If you are doing this with children, do not be surprised if a few pretzels break. It is not effective to simply push the pretzel into the caramel. It will need a little massaging around the pretzel and getting the pressure right might take a little practice.

The melting chocolate flavoured pellets will be easiest, no tempering, just melt dip and dry.

If tempering is not a foreign word or you want to give it a go, here is the link. Use a good quality chocolatiers chocolate.

Dip the broomsticks into the melted chocolate, up to the beginning of the handle. You can also use a spoon and pour the  chocolate over the caramel. This method requires melting less chocolate.

Salted Caramel Broom and Quidditch Sticks from My Kitchen WandAllow the excess to drip off. You can shake a little, over the bowl, to get more off. If all the chocolate stays on the broom then while it dries, the excess will slide to the bottom giving your broomstick a big clump of chocolate at the bottom. Not an issue from an eating perspective but visually it might be nice to have broomsticks that don’t look like they are sitting in a pile of dirt.

Dry broomsticks upright and Fireball 5000’s on their side.

I suggested and am showing pictures of milk chocolate broomsticks but there is absolutely no reason not to dip in dark and detail with milk or bring in some white chocolate, if that is your preference.

Store any you manage to keep from the kids and use to decorate pumpkin pie, an ice cream dessert or use as part of a trick or treat party favour bag.
